Back on Track Psychotherapy now offers Group Therapy!
What is Group Psychotherapy?
Group psychotherapy or group therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which one or more therapists treat a small group of clients together as a group. The term can refer to any form of psychotherapy when delivered in a group format, including Cognitive behavioral therapy or Interpersonal therapy, but it is usually applied to psychodynamic group therapy where the group context and group process is explicitly utilized as a mechanism of change by developing, exploring and examining interpersonal relationships within the group. The concept of group therapy can be taken to include any helping process that takes place in a group, including support groups, skills training groups (such as codependency, anger management or social skills training), and psycho-education groups.

Group Characteristics
Group psychotherapy is typically made up of a small group (6 – 10) of individuals meeting on a regular basis to discuss both private and group issues. The group typically meets weekly for a 1.5 hours. The duration of the group varies based on the group subject but typically lasts 4 to 8 weeks.
Group Therapy Benefits
The primary advantage to group psychotherapy is the emphasis on multiple relationships with particular attention to the way in which individual personality dynamics play out in a wide range of life situations. In individual therapy, the therapist is the primary object of client transference. In group therapy, transference is more diverse since issues and situations are likely to invoke various reactions in the individual members of the group. This permits the client to receive various perspectives about the way others perceive the client. Group therapy works well alone as well as in conjunction with individual psychotherapy. Additionally, group psychotherapy tends to be much less expensive than traditional one on one psychotherapy.
